HAL-9000 (Heuristically Programmed Algorithimic Computer 9000) is an artificial that resides on the spaceship known as Discovery 1 though an ally of Dave Bowman at the beginning of the film. He is the hidden main antagonist in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and a major protagonist in 2010: The Year We Make Contact.

HAL was created and became operational in 1992 in Urbana, Illinois. He now resides in the spaceship known as Discovery 1.

HAL is in charge of maintaining the Discovery 1 ship and its life support, after three weeks, HAL seems to pick up the fault on AE-35, and knowing without that without the unit, the satellite dish antenna will go one hundred percent failure within 72 hours. to prevent this, HAL suggests the crew to replace the faulty unit with a new one, when David Bowman goes out and find that there is no problem with the AE-36 Unit, He radio mission control and Mission control says that HAL is in error that predicted the fault on the AE-36 Unit. Bowman and Poole are suspicious and privately told each other that HAL might be malfunctioning and should perhaps to be disconnected but However, HAL finds out about this and used Poole space pod to cut Poole oxygen and finally killing him. Bowman tries to save Poole but was not allowed to re-enter by HAL, Bowman manage to find the emergency lock and use it to get in the ship and then disconnected the psychotic computer. HAL final words was sang the song ''Daisy Bell''
